Rabin Rabindran is a commercial barrister & international legal consultant and an Associate of the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand Inc (AMINZ).

He specialises in major national and international project negotiation and documentation principally in the fields of business, construction, energy and infrastructure development. Rabin has worked on projects in over 25 countries advising Governments and corporations in Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the Caribbean.

Rabin is also a professional director serving mainly on infrastructure and energy related boards. He has been the Health and Safety lead director on various boards.

Rabin has extensive experience in the following areas

Rabin has extensive experience in major national and international project negotiation and documentation.  He is engaged by law firms as a consultant for the preparation of specialised contract documentation and strategy advice.

Some structuring project work includes:

  • Housing New Zealand Maintenance Project for 58,000 houses throughout New Zealand involving 300 contractors and advised on all issues from tendering to completion of the project 
  • purchasing of the energy assets of Shell by Swift Energy 
  • acted as a consultant for the construction of Clear Communications Head Office at Smale’s Farm Office Park, Takapuna

Rabin has extensive experience in infrastructure development including:

  • Wellington Wastewater Project tender to design, build and operate (DBO) the wastewater facilities
  • advising on mobile substation contract in Indonesia
  • advising on hydro-power and irrigation project for the the Uma Oya Multi-Purpose Project in Sri Lanka
  • advising on telecommunications joint venture in Vietnam
  • advising on US$150m integrated leisure and activity resort project in Malaysia

Rabin has considerable experience in negotiation and mediation – he facilitates discussion between parties to achieve desired outcomes.

Rabin’s commitment to looking after his clients needs and understanding their business leads to being able to resolve matters in dispute in an effective conciliatory manner, reaching resolution that is satisfactory to all parties involved.

He advises governments, government organisations and major corporations. His extensive experience includes advising parties from initial structuring of the project through to successful completion.

He is principally involved with contract negotiation, documentation and dispute resolution.

Rabin is an Associate Member of the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand Inc (AMINZ).

Rabin has vast experience in diverse areas of energy law which allows him to advise clients on a wide range of issues affecting the energy sector. His experience includes:

  • advising the Tuaropaki Trust on all aspects of their geothermal power project in Taupo
  • purchase of Maui Gas from ECNZ for power generation purposes
  • advising Swift Energy on their energy interests in New Zealand 
  • drafting Transpower conditions of contract for substation and transmission line works 
  • considering contracts for the construction, operation and maintenance of power stations in New Zealand and Australia in connection with the sale of 25% of Contact Energy
  • funded by the World Bank as Legal Specialist to advise the Government of Sri Lanka on the development of a 300 MW combined cycle gas turbine facility 
  • Rabin together with two other directors of Solid Energy who were very experienced mining engineers were members of the Solid Energy Health & Safety Committee.
  • Rabin was the lead director on Health & Safety for the board of Auckland Transport and Counties Manukau District Health Board.
  • He currently oversees health & safety issues at the Bank of India (NZ)
